Articles, Presentations & Reports
Production of Grass Biomass in the Northeast An overview of grass biomass systems produced by Jerry H. Cherney at Cornell University. Document covers: site selection, pure grass species vs. mixtures, establishment and management. Published in November 2008.
Biomass Energy 2008 factsheet provides an overview of biomass including utilization, harvesting
crop residues, characterization, properties, benefits, impacts on food
supply. Published by Dennis Buffington and Thomas Wilson at Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences.
New bill promotes biogas production through tax credits This Farm and Dairy article introduces the January 2009 congressional bill, named the Biogas Production Incentives Act of 2009, that would use tax incentives to promote the development of biogas technologies. Quote: "The U.S. Department of Agriculture cites a report by the Senate Agriculture Committee estimating that each year 1.37 billion tons of solid animal waste are produced in the U.S. — the production of biogas could help turn much of this waste into a source of renewable energy."
Projects aimed at raising biomass value Posted November 26, 2008, by The Country Today, about projects being run out of UW-Madison. The project aims to raise the value of biomass by reducing handling steps when harvesting corn stover and grasses.

Technical and Financial Feasibility Analysis of Distributed Bioprocessing Using Regional Biomass Pre-Processing Centers

Published December 2007, a report from Michigan State University, Abstract: " Research indicates that large biorefineries capable of handling 5000-10000MT of biomass per day are necessary to achieve process economies. However, such large biorefineries also entail increased costs of biomass transportation and storage, high transaction costs of contracting with a large number of farmers for biomass supply, potential market power issues, and local environmental impacts. We propose a network of regional biomass preprocessing centers (RBPC) that form an extended biomass supply chain feeding into a biorefinery, as a way to address these issues."
The Billion Ton Study A 2005 report from the DOE and USDA that is officially titled "Biomass as Feedstock for a Bioenergy and Bioproducts industry: The Technical Feasibility of a Billion-Ton Annual Supply."
